Lost opportunities in Industry, Pennsylvania

Last fall on a visit to western Pennsylvania, I stopped by a restaurant/bar called Bad Frogs on my way to my motel.  With a breathtaking view of the Ohio River (even if part of it included the industrial portion down river), I was looking forward to a good meal on the patio looking out to the river.

Boy, was I ever wrong.  The table was - as we say in the south - sticky dirty and our server gave new meaning to the word "ditzy".  She didn't know the available beers and still got them wrong after returning to the kitchen to ask what they were.  The meal - although reasonably priced - was awful.  I like regional takes on different dishes but if you are going to serve pink slaw, it better be damn good; it wasn't.

Not far from where I sat, a small band was trying to set up for late night entertainment; unfortunately, the restaurant's management had apparently not taken care of any of the technical support the band needed.  The band members left disgruntled while I was still eating.  I don't know if they ever returned.

Could there be a better setting for a restaurant?

When I returned last week - mid February - the restaurant had closed, not a surprise at all but a great disappointment.  I had hoped that the owners would realize what a splendid location they had and give it the staff, presentation, food and drink that it deserved.  The restaurant building itself was formerly part of the lock and dam system on the river.  Combine the building's story with its incredible view and the obvious sports fervor of the area and it should be possible to create a truly rocking blue collar sports bar with all kinds of links to lively entertainment and sporting events both on the tube and on the river.

Imagine working with the nearby Beaver County Rowing Association to have a race commencing at the restaurant; or televising baseball and football or enormous HDTV screens followed by a live band.  There aren't any neighbors to complain about the noise and not only is there ample car parking, people could cruise in by boat.  Here's hoping that someone with money, imagination, money, knowledge of running a restaurant, money and a better name (Bad Frogs??) will give this location the chance it deserves to become not just a successful sports bar but a needed employer in an economically depressed community.

Down the road the accomodations were just as bad as the dining was at Bad Frogs.  If I am going to a city to do something very specific - say Las Vegas to gamble - I like to stay in posh digs but when I am travelling to learn about the area, I always try to stay at inexpensive, local establishments.  Quite often these hotels, motels, B&Bs are gems of service with rooms sparked by individuality.  No such luck in Industry - I am in fact not even going to mention the name of the motel.  Unlike Bad Frogs, however, it was almost full on the evening I was there and the advertised smorgasbord was jammed pack with locals.  The same appeared to be true when I drove by it again in February.  While the room was agreeable, the service was downward hostile down to the small placards in the room announcing that if you stole anything the cost would be added to your bill.  Also, the advertised free Internet access applied to a small area in the very public and busy motel lobby.  I am glad the motel was there as it apparently served a need but I would sleep in my car before I would stay there again.

The same cannot be said of the restaurants, bars and B&B I visited on my second trek to the area.  In those establishments I am happy to report that I received not just good food and drink but estimable service as well.

I agree with the review of the beauty and potential of this restaurant - BADFROGS! I disagree on the comments about food and service. The location was new at the time your review was made, yet you make no point of saying this. Having traveled from New York 3 times to visit that specific location I can tell you the atmosphere, unique experience of the staff - yes the wait staff did become familiar with the fare and unique drinks and beer on tap. I personally spoke with people who took advantage of the river to arrive by boat and specifically for the excellent seafood dishes making mention of the low LOW prices. The entertainment - hmmmmm, I also find this rather unusual as the bands we saw the 2nd and 3rd visit were rocking - had people dancing all over the patio outside and played til closing. My only problem - we had to keep it to one night at the river front establishment as we didn't want to miss the fun, cheap good eats, entertainment and locals at the original BADFROGS in Lisbon. The primary location prompted 6 to 7 visits last year ....friends from all over NorthAmerica came in in groups of 10 to 12 on each of these trips. We found it a safe, centrally located, clean, fun & exciting experience. We are all a bit miffed about where we want to hook up for get togethers this year - never in our 3 plus years as meeting all over the country did any such place make it self so keenly a place of safe, clean fun and friendship.

It is incredibly sad that a trio of brothers - Navy SEALs, hence the tongue and cheek name "BADFROGS" - whose first priority is too their commitment to service of our nation and those less fortunate than us, made it impossible to exploit the ultimate full potential of this location and motivate similiar commitments of the locals and town. I am so sad that BADFROGS has, like many great ventures, been forced to close as a result of the economy and circumstances beyond its control. I hold out hope that they will return in a form that allows them the full success they deserve and the kind of environment that I would get on an airplane to get to in a heartbeat. BADFROGS come back soon we miss you, your spirit and the experience, excellent priced and tasting food and entertainment in a clean safe environment.

Thank you for your comments and for giving me a little background of which I was not aware.

I can only comment on the food, service and circumstances the night I was there.  I did not know that the location was new and I appreciate your taking the time to point that out but, nonetheless, the food and service the night I was there were very bad.  The prices were low, I'm not sure saying the food is bad but the prices are low would have made any difference either.  I would have rather paid a little more and had better service and a server who knew the menu and knew which beers were available.  I cannot comment on the entertainment because there was none the night we were there.  A band was setting up but left and did not return while we were at the restaurant.

The location is fantastic, the view incredible, the building a treasure.  I certainly hope that the brothers are able to put something together that will take advantage of the many pluses the site has to offer.

Thanks also for letting me know the origin of the name, I certainly salute those who have served in that elite branch of the service.  Should the restaurant be revived and that name kept, I would suggest using some sort of logo or signage that would explain it as it is not a name that makes one immediately think of good food in a great river location; that being said, the name could certainly be developed into a recognizable brand.

Best of luck to the brothers in perhaps reopening this venue.  We will check back in the next time we are in the area and review it again if it should be open.
